Glasgow’s SEC favourite to host 2020 UN Climate Change Summit

12 Aug 20191m read

Glasgow’s Scottish Event Campus is the likely favourite to host the 2020 UN Climate Change Summit.

The UK has partnered with Italy for a joint bid, which would see a preliminary meeting held in Italy and the main conference in Glasgow. Turkey is also still in the running, but the UK and Italy’s joint bid is the favourite.

Up to 30,000 delegates are expected at the high-profile summit, which took place in Poland last year, and welcomed Greta Thunberg as a speaker.

Events industry organisation Positive Impact, which lobbies for sustainable events, has asked for the views of eventprofs in the build up to this year’s UN summit. It takes place 25-27 September in New York.

Former energy minister Claire Perry, who is the UK-nominated president for COP26, said: “As one of the UK’s most sustainable cities, with a record for hosting high-profile international events, Glasgow is the right choice to showcase the UK’s commitment to the environment.

“In 2020, world leaders will come together to discuss how to protect our planet and set the direction for the years to come.”
